Kindel Furniture Company History
Firstly, the Kindel Company was founded in 1901 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Of course, the original company was founded by Charles J. Kindel, whose vision for the company was to produce high quality furniture with high attention to detail and precision.
The company continued under Kindel family ownership until 1954. Then, in 1954, the Kindel Furniture Company was purchased by a businessman named John Fisher.
Fisher, who was from Indiana, maintained the same vision for the company as the founder Charles J. Kindel. Of course, he wanted to produce high quality furniture with a dedication to skilled craftsmanship.
In addition to their dedication to craftsmanship, The Fisher family maintained the decision to keep all furniture production in the United States. All of the Kindel Company pieces were–and continue to be–handcrafted in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
In the decade since the 1950s, the Kindel Company continues to use high quality wood and skilled domestic work. As you may know, many other vintage furniture companies did the opposite. Frankly, Pennsylvania House Furniture Company imported many items from China after 2005.
Of course, such a decision impacts local communities and the greater economic system in multiple ways. Additionally, a solid wood product crafted from hardwoods grown in the United States far surpasses Asian made furniture.
Certainly, this decision also led to a continued attention to quality, and a long legacy for the company.
Today, in fact, the company Kindel has acquired two other American Furniture Brands: Karges Furniture and Councill Furniture. All three, of course, have a fantastic reputation for quality-made and beautiful furniture.

For instance, the Dorothy Draper line shows a healthy dose of color, with a wide range of whimsical paint finishes! In fact, these exuberant pieces have found their way to designer show-houses and fine homes across the country.
Indeed, vintage Kindel Furniture often shows trend-focused design, too. Kindel Winterthur Collection
Surprisingly, Kindel Winterthur Collection Furniture is one of the most desirable vintage lines made by Kindel Furniture. This particular line started with a partnership with the Winterthur Museum in Winterthur, Delaware.
Winterthur was the former home of Henry Francis Dupont, a wealthy collector of fine American and European Antiques. His collection housed at Winterthur comprises over 85,000 objects, including a fine and important collection of historic furniture. (Most of the pieces in the collection date to before 1840.)
Of course, the fine craftsmanship and attention to detail of Kindel Company attracted the museum’s eye when they were searching for a partner. They needed a fine workshop house to recreate this line of reproduction furniture based on Dupont’s amazing collection. Thus, Kindel was awarded the coveted license to reproduce the most outstanding collection at Winterthur.
Kindel Winterthur Collection includes some outstanding furniture. Some of the most noteworthy reproductions include the Philadelphia High Chest. This high chest features a stunning carved top and ball and claw foot legs, representing the American Rococo style.
Also, you may also be lucky enough to find some Winterthur Kindel Sofas, wing back chairs and incredible mahogany side tables. Finally, you may find a Winterthur sideboard or breakfront that no doubt will steal your heart.
