Is Sligh Furniture Valuable? Sligh Furniture Video

Sligh Furniture Company

Many people recognize Sligh Furniture company for their quality. The company has made beautiful desks, bedroom furniture and especially Sligh clocks for Americans for many years.

To learn more about this furniture company, watch this video:

Today, the company has been bought out and exists as a subsidiary brand for Lexington Home. So, you can still purchase products made by Sligh. However, you will have to find a retailer who stocks the brand.

Of course, you can find quality pre-owned furniture online as well. So, you may want to search on places like eBay, Chairish, Facebook Marketplace and even smaller sights like letgo to find great deals on vintage Sligh furniture.

Most products by Sligh feature solid mahogany or cherry. Of course, they mostly made high end furniture out of their Michigan factories. Indeed, most Sligh furniture got sold to high end wealthy clientele and people who liked quality reproduction furniture.

So, in many ways Sligh found itself in the top fractions of the market, like Biggs Furniture or even Baker Furniture.

Value of Sligh Furniture

As most products made by the company featured nice woods and high end construction, it should not surprise you that most vintage Sligh furniture has a pretty good resale value.

After all, Sligh vintage furniture features fine mahogany, walnut and cherry woods. Also, their products like Sligh desks often featured leather tops. Sometimes, the leather featured gold embossing as well.

So, on the vintage market, Sligh tends to have a good resale value.

A nice vintage Sligh desk with leather top can sell for anywhere between $600 and $1500. Of course, the condition and style matters greatly here. However, in general, these vintage desks still command a good dollar.

The large pedestal desks by Sligh have a nice masculine look. Additionally, many were built with special features, like file cabinet drawers and secret compartments. Also, most tend to have luxurious features like paneled sides and fronts. Indeed, Sligh office furniture continues to hold its value.

Likewise, Sligh grandfather clocks can sell for a few hundred upwards to a few thousand on the used furniture market. Of course, the company made hundreds of different models of grandfather clocks.

They ranged from very simple cases, to inlaid mahogany clocks. Additionally, some clocks had multiple chimes settings.

Nearly all of the Sligh grandfather clocks we have sold also had beveled glass fronts. So, you could really admire the beautiful brass pendulum and weights in these clocks. Also, the works inside these grandfather clocks demonstrate good quality as well.

Sligh Furniture Chest of Drawers

Sligh Furniture Chest of Drawers can vary widely in price. Of course, if you have an early 1920s dresser by Sligh, it may not have as much value as a later model.

So, a very old 1920s Sligh dresser may only sell for a few hundred or less. Sometimes, with time, the finish and overall luster of 1920s furniture fades quite a bit. So, very old Sligh dressers may not sell too quickly either.

Typically, the traditional mahogany dressers by Sligh have Federal features. Of course, they may have line inlay around the drawers and brass hardware. These tend to sell for anywhere between $400 and $1200, depending on condition.

Many people ask us, should I refinish a Sligh furniture piece? Or is it more valuable in original finish?

Largely, you should refinish an old 1920s Sligh piece if you can properly restore it. With the correct methods, you can bring up the value of old vintage Sligh pieces by stripping them down, sanding them and staining the bare wood. Of course, you should finish with a protective coating, either of spray Lacquer or polyurethane.

Furthermore, if a Sligh desk or chest shows broken or damaged finish, it becomes almost worthless. However, factoring in your time, materials and work in refinishing may not net you a huge profit.

So, if your aim is to make money, it may not be a good idea to refinish your vintage Sligh pieces.

Sadly, this work often is undervalued in the market today.

On the other hand, if you can save an old piece of furniture for your own enjoyment, its always worth it!
