Vintage Ethan Allen Furniture
Vintage Ethan Allen furniture has a charm like no other! Of course, early 1950s and 1960s Ethan Allen furniture has a very distinct look. Typically, Ethan Allen dressers from this period are made of solid maple. Also, they may have wooden hardware and a slightly orangish finish.
Ethan Allen from the 1970s continues to rely heavily on cherry and maple hardwoods. However, some Ethan Allen furniture from this period has more of a traditional look. Of course, in the late 1970s, Ethan Allen purchased Kling Furniture Factories. So, we see some solid mahogany woods also enter the Ethan Allen collections.
In the 1980s, Ethan Allen branched out and saw more traditional style pieces. Of course, darker finishes came with the territory, as more Federal style reproductions and classic lines came to the forefront. Additionally, Ethan Allen Colonial style dining room sets, either with Queen Anne or Windsor style chairs, were sold to thousands of homes in the US.
In the 1990s, relaxed French Country styles dominated many of the Ethan Allen factories. However, traditional American and British styles were still offered to Ethan Allen’s growing fanbase during this period. Also in the 1990s, some Ethan Allen mission style pieces were introduced. Finally, some transitional styles like Shabby Chic and painted furniture also hit the market.
Ethan Allen Collections Discontinued
As you can see, Ethan Allen dabbled in multiple different styles and offerings over the years. However, there were some standout and very popular Ethan Allen Collections that are now discontinued that bear remembering.
The Best Ethan Allen Collections, Discontinued are:
Ethan Allen Heirloom Collection. Introduced in the 1970s, the Heirloom Collection was based on early American antiques.
- Ethan Allen Old Tavern. This collection features thick, dark stained pine wood as the basis. Of course, it was also introduced in the 1970s.
- Farmhouse Pine by Ethan Allen. Ethan Allen Farmhouse pine featured lighter stains and more rustic finishes.
- EA Country French. Ethan Allen’s take on Country French was in production for at least two decades and featured French style chairs, tables and dining room sets.
- The Townhouse Collection by Ethan Allen. The 1990s Ethan Allen furniture Townhouse Collection had a swanky, yet still traditional look. However, some later Townhouse Collection pieces made in the mid 2000s may not show as high quality as the earlier pieces.
- Ethan Allen British Classics. As you might have guessed, this collection featured a casually elegant British look. Ethan Allen British Classics bedroom pieces were quite popular, as were their rectangular dining tables with chunky legs.
These discontinued Ethan Allen Collections do not make up a complete list. Of course, there are many other quality lines by Ethan Allen to explore. However, in my opinion, the older furniture made by Ethan Allen tops most of the items sold as Ethan Allen today.
Is Ethan Allen still made in the USA?
Today, Ethan Allen still upholsters much of its furniture in the United States. That said, a large portion of the parts and case goods stamped with Ethan Allen are no longer made in the USA.
Additionally, you can expect that the materials of these new imports may not live up to your expectations, especially if you are familiar with vintage Ethan Allen furniture. Indeed, some of the more modern Ethan Allen furniture features lighter weight wood. Of course, you may also see that even upholstery by Ethan Allen does not feature the same hardwood frames that you would find inside 1990s Ethan Allen Furniture.
That said, the company boasts that 75% of their products are made in North America. Six of their nine manufacturing plants are in the United States, one is in Honduras and two in Mexico.
Is Ethan Allen still in Business?
In this rapidly changing business environment post 2020, things look somewhat stable for Ethan Allen. Of course, all of their manufacturing, retail and design centers were forced to close for several months in 2020.
Additionally, 3000 of Ethan Allen’s employees were furloughed. So, like most businesses that were forced to restructure and possibly re-align their business model, Ethan Allen too seems to be in a process of reinvention.
For one, Ethan Allen has in recent months gone to a Direct-to-Consumer model. Traditionally, Ethan Allen worked with retailers and designers to sell its products. So, if you wanted to purchase an Ethan Allen table in the past, you had to go to a physical bricks and mortar location or contact an interior designer.
Today, you can go directly to the Ethan Allen website in order to purchase products as a consumer. Of course, this makes pricing a piece of furniture much more transparent. As consumers get more acclimated to shopping from home, Ethan Allen has really developed their website and online shopping experience.
Surprisingly, you can even order customized pieces from Ethan Allen online today. While they take a little longer, you can easily alter an order so that it is just right for your home.
At this point, you may be wondering about the shipping process and price for new Ethan Allen furniture. However, this too has become a lot easier and transparent. Ethan Allen has great delivery prices that are dependent on your total order price. In fact, the most that the company seems to charge for delivery is $199. Also, some items ship via UPS.
